Aston Villa was founded in 1874, under a gas lamp in Heathfield Road, when four members of the Aston Villa Wesleyan Chapel decided that football would be the ideal winter activity to complement their thriving cricket section. Instead of forming a rugby club, as initially discussed, they chose Association football, leading to the birth of one of England's greatest clubs.

Early Triumphs and the Birth of the FA Cup Legacy

Under the leadership of secretary George Burrell Ramsay, Villa first entered the FA Cup in 1879. Despite some initial setbacks, they found success, winning their first trophy in the Birmingham Senior Cup in 1880. By the 1886-87 season, Villa claimed their first FA Cup title, defeating West Bromwich Albion 2-0 in the final.

The Formation of the Football League and Early Dominance

In 1888, Villa was instrumental in the founding of the Football League. By 1894, the club had won its first League title, setting the stage for a golden era. By the early 20th century, Villa had accumulated five League championships and several FA Cup victories, including the League and Cup double in 1897.

The Golden Era and Decline

Villa’s dominance continued in the first two decades of the 20th century, winning more FA Cups in 1905, 1913, and 1920. In 1931, the team scored a then-record 128 League goals, although they had to settle for second place behind Arsenal. The 1930s brought changes, including Villa's first relegation, but the team bounced back under coach Jimmy Hogan.

Post-War Success and Struggles

After World War II, Villa won the 1957 FA Cup, defeating Manchester United 2-1 at Wembley. Despite successes, including winning the inaugural League Cup in 1961, the following decades were challenging, marked by relegations and the club dropping to the Third Division in 1970.

Resurgence and European Glory

Villa began their journey back in 1972, winning the Third Division title and securing promotion. By 1981, they were champions of England once again, and the club reached its peak in 1982 by defeating Bayern Munich 1-0 to become European Cup champions. The following year, Villa also won the UEFA Super Cup against Barcelona. However, by 1987, they were relegated again, only to bounce back shortly after.

Modern Era and Premier League Foundations

Villa were founder members of the Premier League in 1992 and finished runners-up to Manchester United in the inaugural season. League Cup wins in 1994 and 1996 added to their silverware, as did the Intertoto Cup in 2001. Despite setbacks, including relegation in 2016, Villa returned to the Premier League in 2019 after defeating Derby County in the play-off final.

Recent Achievements and European Aspirations

Villa secured Premier League survival on the final day of the 2019-20 season, and under head coach Unai Emery, the team has since seen remarkable progress. In the 2023/24 season, Villa finished fourth, securing Champions League football for the first time and reaching the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa Conference League.

As Villa celebrates its 150th anniversary, excitement is high as the club prepares to compete among Europe’s elite once again. This storied journey is a testament to the resilience, passion, and pride that define Aston Villa.
